Jefferson Parish
Cameron Calamari
Cameron “Cam” Calamari entered this world on Christmas Day in 2002, a fitting birthdate for a young man who would spend his entire life giving to others. A resident of Jefferson Parish, Cam was an 18-year-old senior and co-captain of the cheerleading squad at Archbishop Rummel High School. He poured his whole heart into cheerleading, spending seven years in competitive cheer and building lifelong friendships with athletes across the country. Cam absolutely loved life, had a gift for making people laugh, and possessed an inner talent for leadership that perfectly matched his athleticism. He was fiercely inclusive, standing up against bullying and ensuring that everyone—no matter who they were—felt welcome and valued. He had a rare, beautiful ability to make others believe in themselves, and the immense love the community held for him was felt deeply when over 500 people gathered to honor him at his funeral.
Long before his passing, Cam made the independent decision at the Office of Motor Vehicles to register as an organ donor. It was a choice born entirely from his natural bravery, selflessness, and desire to help anyone in need.
Tragically, on September 13, 2021, Cam’s vibrant life was cut short far too soon. In the face of their unthinkable nightmare, Cam's parents found themselves holding the answer to the prayers of other families who were desperately begging for a miracle. Honoring his wishes, Cam became a true hero, saving and enhancing the lives of nearly 70 individuals through the donation of six organs, his eyes, skin, cartilage, and bone tissue.
For his family, Cam's decision has been the most rewarding and remarkable experience, turning their profound grief into a powerful tool for healing. They have since met several of his recipients and speak with them frequently. Hearing that these individuals are alive and well brings his family an immense sense of pride and a gentle calm, making them feel as though Cam is still alive in a truly special way.
Cam's legacy of love proved to be so powerful that it inspired his own mother to follow in his footsteps; she recently became a living donor, giving a kidney to her brother-in-law who was suffering from polycystic kidney disease (PKD). Through her advocacy for living donation, she continues to keep her son’s spirit alive, proving Cam's belief that we are all deeply connected.
Though Cam is no longer here to cheer on his teammates or lift up his peers, his heroic sacrifice showed the true meaning of life. Much of him lives on today, and his enduring legacy of kindness, inclusion, and ultimate generosity will continue to touch lives and answer prayers for generations to come.
